Chelsea legend John Terry believes his former teammate, John Obi Mikel, could still make a significant impact in the Premier League, even three years after his retirement. The iconic center-back, who shared the pitch with some of the world’s best midfielders during his time at Stamford Bridge, including Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, and Juan Mata, has nothing but praise for the former Nigeria international.
Speaking in an interview with talkSport on Wednesday, Terry reflected on Mikel’s exceptional abilities, claiming the 37-year-old could easily slot into any top-flight side today. Despite Mikel hanging up his boots in October 2021 after playing for Kuwait SC, Terry is adamant that the midfielder’s qualities remain undeniable.
“He was brilliant,” said Terry. “To have him in front of me was amazing he covered so much ground. I still play in Legends games now, and I believe he could still play in the Premier League today. He had it all. Those holding midfielders like Makelele often don’t get the credit they deserve, but Obi was one of them.”
The duo enjoyed a successful 11-year partnership at Chelsea, from 2006 to 2017, playing together in 266 matches and accumulating over 17,000 minutes of action. Both players were instrumental in Chelsea’s trophy-laden years, lifting the Premier League titles in 2010 and 2015, as well as the Champions League in 2012. Mikel, who played the entire 120 minutes in the famous Champions League final against Bayern Munich, remains a beloved figure in Chelsea history.
Having joined Chelsea in 2006 from Lyn FK, Mikel made 372 appearances for the Blues, contributing six goals and 12 assists. His calm, composed style and unparalleled work rate in midfield were crucial to Chelsea’s success during his time at the club, earning him the respect of both teammates and opponents alike.
Terry’s words highlight just how highly Mikel is regarded, with many still believing the Nigerian’s talent could thrive in today’s Premier League.
